493 Main Street has always been a place where people came to stay awhile. Built in 1910, during the height of Cairo’s early tourism boom, the structure rose with quiet confidence—a Late Victorian and American Foursquare hybrid designed for both charm and endurance. It sat at the center of Main Street’s rhythm, surrounded by travelers, merchants, and the steady hum of small-town life that defined the Catskills in the early twentieth century.
In its earliest days, the building offered lodging to guests escaping city life for mountain air and open skies. As the region grew into a haven for vacationers, 493 Main Street became part of the Catskills’ hospitality story—hosting boarders, travelers, and seasonal visitors long before boutique lodging was a trend.
After World War II, when tourism reshaped the region, the property evolved into a multi-unit lodge and boarding house. It mirrored Cairo’s own transformation from a resort-driven economy into a working-class town with deep roots. Each renovation and reinvention reflected the times: the postwar optimism of the 1950s, the quiet resilience of the 1970s, the careful restorations that marked its comeback in the early 2000s.
By the 2020s, the building underwent a full reawakening. Renovated with an eye for design and detail, its structure was preserved but its spirit was reimagined. What once served travelers of a different era now stands as Wynne Social Club—a modern Catskills lodge that honors its heritage while embracing new forms of connection, creativity, and escape. Today, 493 Main Street continues the legacy it started more than a century ago. Still a place to stay, still a place to gather, and still deeply woven into the story of Cairo. The faces have changed, the design has evolved, but the soul remains: a Catskills lodge built for travelers who crave meaning, beauty, and a sense of place.
